Overview of Job
42 Asset Management is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and commercially minded Director of Finance and Accounting to join a rapidly growing alternative asset management platform focused on annuity reinsurance and alternative fixed income and private equity investment strategies. The firm is approaching a significant inflection point, and this individual will play a foundational role in helping build and scale the firm’s finance, operational, and reporting infrastructure while partnering closely with senior leadership on strategic growth initiatives.
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical accounting expertise, strong financial leadership, and the ability to operate effectively within a lean, entrepreneurial environment. This individual must be comfortable taking ownership of the firm’s finance and accounting function—spanning financial management and reporting, technical accounting, audit, tax, and regulatory compliance, while partnering with the operations investment teams to ensure end-to-end financial integrity across the platform
This position is ideal for someone seeking meaningful ownership and the opportunity to help build a scaled alternatives platform combining institutional insurance asset management with reinsurance-related investment strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Finance & Reporting
Oversee financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and operational accounting functions across the management company and investment vehicles.
Manage quarterly and annual close processes, including coordination with external administrators, auditors, tax advisors, and other service providers.
Develop and maintain internal controls, reporting procedures, and operational policies appropriate for a growing institutional platform.
Monitor management company expenses, fund-level reporting, and investor-related financial processes.
Assist in the onboarding, operational setup, and ongoing oversight of insurance and reinsurance-related transactions.
Investment Operations
Maintain oversight of portfolio reporting, investment cash flows, collateral activity, and operational risk monitoring.
Coordinate with investment professionals, counterparties, custodians, brokers, and service providers to ensure accurate trade capture and reconciliation.
Support valuation oversight, portfolio analytics, and operational due diligence initiatives.
Assist in monitoring reporting obligations associated with insurance and reinsurance structures.
Operations & Infrastructure
Help build and scale the firm’s operational and financial infrastructure.
Oversee day-to-day middle-office and back-office responsibilities including reconciliations, treasury management, wire approvals, and operational workflows.
Manage relationships with fund administrators, auditors, legal counsel, banking partners, and third-party vendors.
Implement scalable systems, controls, and reporting frameworks to support the continued institutionalization of the platform.
Ensure operational readiness for future fund launches, strategic partnerships, and new investment structures.
Strategic Leadership
Partner closely with senior leadership on strategic planning, firm development, and operational initiatives.
Assist with investor diligence requests, fundraising support, and institutional infrastructure development.
Contribute to governance, compliance coordination, and enterprise-wide operational processes.
Serve as a key member of a small, high-performing, and entrepreneurial team.
Job Requirements
We are seeking candidates with approximately 7 – 10 years of relevant experience at a Big Four accounting firm and/or a private equity, private credit, or hedge fund platform.
Must be located in New York City.
Must have a strong academic record, excellent writing and oral communication skills, and the ability to work independently with clients and colleagues.
