Leads financial, business, human resource, information technology, building facility. and risk management operations. Ensures necessary policies and procedures for the financial credibility and viability of SHAPE America. Provides appropriate operational support for member programs.
The CFO and SVP, Business & Finance is a member of the senior leadership team reporting directly to SHAPE America’s CEO.
Nature and Scope of Work:
Ensures that all financial functions, controls, and reporting are accurate, compliant, and provides the information and analysis needed for governance and senior management to make timely and effective strategic, planning, and operational decisions. Ensures timely and clean financial audits.
Reviews business contracts for appropriate phrasing and specification coverage, makes modifications, develops terminology, and confers with legal counsel when necessary. Conducts negotiations and contracting for various consulting services. Participates in the formulation of business and marketing plans as well as employee benefit plans for SHAPE America.
Reports regularly to the Board of Director’s (BOD) and the Finance Committee on the financial status and budget reviews of the association. Evaluates and interprets financial statements. Provides the BOD and Finance Committee with operating options, considering income and expense levels.
Conducts necessary transactions required to maintain the association’s investment position. In conjunction with the Investment Consultant, is instrumental in determining the association’s short and long-term investment policies and strategies. Provides direction and guidance to the Finance Committee in their review of the investment policies. Recommends Investment Consultants.
Develops financial, accounting, and information technology policies for the association, including budget parameters, and establishes pricing strategies for various products.
Works with association vice presidents and directors to develop annual budgets. Monitors budgets to compare actual expense/income levels with projected estimates.
Conducts quarterly financial reviews of all units and reviews results with department heads. Provides alternative courses of action in order to remain within budgeted parameters.
Annually determines the guidelines to be employed by SHAPE America and its Group Tax affiliate associations in reporting tax information. Responds to tax inquiries from affiliates and develops necessary educational materials for affiliates. Prepares and submits the association’s annual information tax returns.
Provides information used in the preparation of all grant applications. Submits required federal grant financial reports.
Oversees management of SHAPE America’s information technology. Provides oversight in the development and monitoring of IT controls. Supervises all (vacant) building and grounds functions pending sale of the Reston property. Formulates long term IT plans and strategies in conjunction with the CEO.
Manages human resources functions. Provides oversight in the development and monitoring of HR policies and programs. Serves as Trustee for association’s pension plan.
At the annual SHAPE America convention, oversees all financial transactions, including attendee registration, product sales, and ticket sales.

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field along with ten years of mid to senior-level financial, accounting, and budgetary experience in a non-profit environment required, CPA and prior management experience preferred. Must have excellent presentation skills, ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and be proficient in Microsoft Excel and related accounting software/reporting.
SHAPE America is a fully remote organization. Some travel is required for meetings and/or the annual National Convention. A Virginia resident with is preferred for this position due to ongoing management requirements associated with SHAPE America’s Reston, VA headquarters.
